Find Your Community.

In today’s world, the meaning of “community” has evolved significantly since my childhood. As a Realtor, I understand how important community is for clients, but what does community mean today?

In the past, your community was defined by your neighbourhood, school, and local programs. People didn’t have to go far to find their community; it was right outside their door.

In 2024, community means something different and finding it can be challenging for both children and adults. As a professional sports coach and Family Realtor, I’ve seen that community can mean two different things. Generally, community is defined as:

“A Group of People Living in the Same Place or Having
a Particular Characteristic in Common.”

However, families today often choose where to live based on personal preferences rather than a sense of belonging. They seek proximity to trails, shopping, careers, and schools with strong academic and extracurricular programs. The history and offerings of a school, such as second languages, can be significant factors for families.

Today, community is more about the activities you’re involved in rather than where you live. As a basketball coach, my main community is the “basketball community.” These are the people I grew up with and continue to be around as I progress in my career.

Even though my parents didn’t play basketball and only one of my three siblings did, my entire family is part of this community. My younger brother is now a professional basketball coach, and our deep involvement in this community has forged strong relationships with other families.

My children are also involved in the basketball community but have their own passions that connect them to different communities. My daughter, for instance, is part of the art community, and it’s heartwarming to see parents proudly supporting their children’s dreams, whether it’s in dance, hockey, or other interests.

As someone deeply immersed in the basketball community, I initially didn’t appreciate other communities. However, following my children’s interests has opened my eyes to the many ways people come together, not necessarily living in the same place but sharing common goals and passions.

a Particular Interest in Common.”

The world is changing, and as a Family Realtor, I’m fascinated by how communities are evolving. Online communities are now prevalent, offering connections that weren’t possible before. While these online spaces can be overwhelming, they also provide opportunities for people to find like-minded groups that support their personal growth.

In my experience working with people through real estate and sports, I believe finding your passion is key to finding your community. For parents, it can be daunting to get kids off screens and into real-life communities, but it’s crucial to keep searching until you find the right fit.

Test different programs and volunteer, as every community needs volunteers. Volunteering helps you immerse yourself in communities, providing a sense of belonging and appreciation. Conversations flow more easily, and you’ll find camaraderie with those who share your interests.

While I cherished the community I grew up in, I’m excited about today’s broader and more diverse communities. The world is no longer cookie-cutter, and people have a wide range of interests. Wherever you find yourself, I hope you are surrounded by a supportive community, regardless of your civic address.
